BioTech Vegas – The Start of Something Big

A biotechnology hub represents one of the most significant opportunities to diversify Southern Nevada’s economy while creating high-quality jobs, attracting investment, advancing healthcare innovation, and strengthening the region’s long-term competitiveness. Although Southern Nevada has historically been recognized for tourism, hospitality, gaming, and entertainment, the region has steadily expanded into sectors such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, logistics, aerospace, and technology. Building a robust biotechnology ecosystem would capitalize on this momentum, positioning Southern Nevada as a destination for life sciences research, commercialization, and precision medicine while creating lasting economic benefits for residents and businesses alike.

A thriving biotechnology sector generates some of the highest-paying jobs in the modern economy. Scientists, engineers, laboratory technicians, data scientists, regulatory specialists, manufacturing professionals, and healthcare innovators all contribute to a diverse workforce that supports biotech companies from discovery through commercialization. These careers offer wages significantly above regional averages and create opportunities across multiple education levels, from skilled laboratory technicians with associate degrees to doctoral researchers and experienced entrepreneurs. Importantly, each biotechnology job supports additional employment in construction, legal services, accounting, information technology, logistics, and professional services, creating a multiplier effect that strengthens the broader regional economy.
Salt Lake City had no BioTech industry in 1970; the Research Triangle was farmland in 1959; Phoenix had no life sciences strategy until 2002, but each made deliberate decisions that compounded over decades. Las Vegas is at that same inflection point today, with better tax advantages than any of them. BioTech Vegas was launched in 2025 as a nonprofit coalition of public, private, and academic leaders advancing Southern Nevada’s life sciences ecosystem. It supports infrastructure development, business attraction, regional coordination, and advocacy to strengthen the sector and expand opportunity. Quarterly in-person meetings provide an opportunity to engage with entrepreneurs, researchers, small businesses, and others. Additionally, BioTech Vegas seeks to create a neutral environment for information exchange, lessons learned, and opportunities for growth beyond investment. Nevada is also uniquely positioned to develop a biotechnology cluster because of its rapidly growing population and expanding healthcare infrastructure. As one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, the region offers an increasingly diverse patient population that can support clinical research, pharmaceutical studies, and the development of innovative healthcare technologies. This population growth also increases demand for medical services, creating opportunities for biotechnology companies focused on diagnostics, therapeutics, medical devices, digital health, and precision medicine.
For several years, GOED, along with many other stakeholders, has sponsored the Nevada Delegation to the BIO International Conference. The 2026 conference was held in San Diego, California, and was an incredible week for Southern Nevada’s growing bioscience ecosystem. Over four days, the Nevada Pavilion welcomed more than 400 attendees eager to learn about our region’s life sciences industry and hosted approximately 75 one-on-one business-partnering meetings that connected Southern Nevada organizations with biotechnology companies, investors, research institutions, and industry leaders from around the world. Together, we are changing perceptions and showcasing Southern Nevada as a destination for innovation, commercialization, and investment.
The region’s academic institutions provide another critical foundation for the growth of biotechnology. Universities and colleges can serve as engines of innovation by conducting research, educating the next generation of scientists, and partnering with private industry to commercialize new discoveries. Strengthening collaborations between higher education, healthcare systems, entrepreneurs, and private investors can accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into market-ready products. These partnerships also encourage students to remain in Southern Nevada after graduation, reducing “brain drain” and cultivating a highly skilled local workforce.

One of the largest dedicated life science incubators in the Intermountain West, Roseman Bioventures, was launched, offering 120,000 square feet of turnkey wet lab space, research infrastructure, regulatory guidance, and direct connections to investors and industry partners. Current tenants include Heligenics, VenaVitals, Regenicin, and WAVR Technologies. Founding partners include J.P. Morgan, Desert Forge Ventures, GOED, LVGEA, and BioTech Vegas.
Healthcare organizations also stand to benefit significantly from the development of a biotechnology ecosystem. Hospitals, academic medical centers, community health centers, and physician practices can participate in clinical trials, research collaborations, and the adoption of emerging medical technologies. Expanded access to cutting-edge therapies and clinical research enhances patient care while attracting highly specialized physicians and researchers to the region. As healthcare providers increasingly collaborate with biotechnology companies, Southern Nevada can become a destination for medical innovation, improving health outcomes while supporting economic growth.
To address a growing business culture, we are seeking to establish a BioTech Business Showcase in partnership with the Nevada Hospital Association. This opportunity will allow for ‘matchmaking’ of Nevada companies with hospital administrators willing to establish ‘proof of concept’ technologies in the clinical setting. These public-private partnerships will generate additional sales and bolster clinical research data for companies seeking to raise pre-seed to Series A funding, and beyond.
Developing a biotechnology hub would also enhance Southern Nevada’s ability to attract venture capital and private investment. Investors increasingly seek regions where research institutions, skilled talent, healthcare providers, entrepreneurs, and supportive public policies intersect to create innovation ecosystems. By cultivating these assets, Southern Nevada can compete for startup companies, established life sciences firms, and federal research funding. Successful biotechnology companies often generate intellectual property, patents, licensing opportunities, and high-growth startups that reinvest in the local economy and inspire additional entrepreneurial activity.
Originally envisioned as Scarlet Capital, Desert Forge Ventures has now been established to catalyze and nurture the growth of early-stage technology startups through venture investment, while simultaneously delivering significant returns to shareholders and the community. Desert Forge Ventures was established with funding from the Economic Development Agency and in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Desert Forge Ventures is actively fundraising and seeking investment opportunities, with an increased focus on start-up companies associated with UNLV.
Public-private partnerships will play an essential role in building this ecosystem. Strategic investments in laboratory space, incubators, wet labs, research parks, workforce training, and business acceleration programs can lower barriers for emerging companies while encouraging established firms to expand operations in the region. Economic development organizations, local governments, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and private industry each have important roles in creating the infrastructure necessary to support long-term biotechnology growth.
The City of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency has embarked on a $10 million BioHealth Innovation Challenge to meet the rising demands for locating businesses and institutions to support the sector. The City of Las Vegas and its partners are investing in infrastructure to attract new talent and development. The BioHealth Innovation Challenge was launched on August 12, 2025, and invited game-changing proposals to develop and operate a biosciences incubator lab in Las Vegas. One transformative project will receive up to $10 million. Focus areas span genomics, AI and health informatics, medical devices, regenerative medicine, and therapeutics. The initiative reflects a direct commitment from city government to grow the life sciences sector.
Southern Nevada also offers several competitive advantages that can differentiate it from other emerging biotechnology markets. Its business-friendly tax structure, relatively affordable cost of living compared to many coastal innovation hubs, expanding transportation infrastructure, and proximity to major western markets make the region attractive for companies seeking to grow while managing operating costs. As remote collaboration and distributed research become increasingly common, companies are looking beyond traditional biotechnology centers for locations that offer access to talent, quality of life, and opportunities for expansion.
In addition to strengthening the regional economy, the development of biotechnology supports resilience. Communities with diversified economies are generally better positioned to withstand economic downturns affecting any single industry. By expanding into life sciences and biotechnology, Southern Nevada can further diversify its historical reliance on tourism while creating industries that generate year-round economic activity, attract research investment, and foster innovation. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the critical importance of domestic biotechnology capabilities, including vaccine development, diagnostics, medical supply manufacturing, and public health preparedness. Building local expertise in these areas enhances both economic security and community resilience.
The emergence of artificial intelligence, genomic medicine, digital health, and personalized therapeutics further amplifies the opportunity. Biotechnology increasingly relies on data analytics, advanced computing, automation, and precision diagnostic fields that align well with broader technology investments occurring throughout Nevada. By fostering collaboration among technology companies, healthcare providers, universities, and biotechnology firms, Southern Nevada can create an innovation ecosystem that accelerates scientific discovery and attracts entrepreneurs from across the nation.
Ultimately, developing a biotechnology hub is not simply an investment in one industry; it is an investment in the future economic prosperity, health, and innovation capacity of Southern Nevada. A coordinated strategy focused on workforce development, research partnerships, infrastructure investment, entrepreneurship, and commercialization can create thousands of high-quality jobs, attract billions in private investment over time, and establish the region as a nationally recognized center for life sciences innovation. By embracing biotechnology as a cornerstone of its economic development strategy, Southern Nevada has the opportunity to build a more diversified, resilient, and globally competitive economy that benefits businesses, healthcare providers, researchers, and residents for generations to come.
