RURAL Economic &Community Development
The Rural Economic and Community Development Division of the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) is tasked with promoting and facilitating economic and community development throughout rural Nevada. The overarching objective is to build prosperity and enhance the quality of life in rural Nevada. The Division works towards this objective primarily through community development, which creates stronger, more connected communities where residents have a greater ability to shape their own future and achieve a higher quality of life.
This can include: infrastructure improvements; business creation, attraction, retention, and expansion efforts; capital improvements; beautification; programming; historic preservation; and other activities that help build healthy, economically vibrant communities. The Rural Economic and Community Development Division utilizes several programs within its purview to achieve this goal, including the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the Nevada Main Street Program.

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, authorized by the 1974 Housing and Community Development Act, provides funding to Nevada cities under 50,000 and counties under 200,000 through the State and Small Cities (Non-Entitlement) Program. Larger cities and counties receive funds directly from HUD. GOED’s Division of Rural Community & Economic Development administers the Non-Entitlement Program, focusing on infrastructure in rural communities.

Main street
Nevada Main Street is a holistic approach to downtown revitalization that includes historic preservation, community development, beautification, and economic vitality. It supports business creation and retention to create and sustain healthy and economically vibrant communities, with a primary focus on improving quality of life for residents. The program offers community-based initiatives with a practical, adaptable framework to adjust for each unique community, growing with the community over time.
