WEST WENDOVER, Nev. — The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), through its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, has helped fund the completion of a new modern fire station in West Wendover that will serve over 4,000 people.

West Wendover Fire Station #13, a project nearly 20 years in the making, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month, unveiling a modern facility that will serve the city’s future needs for round-the-clock fire service.

The new station cost $13.6 million, which included a $500,000 grant from CDBG.

“The new West Wendover Fire Station #13 is a magnificent accomplishment for the City of West Wendover,” said City Manager Chris Melville. “The completed project provides our community and our emergency services with a new modern home, built to serve the decades to come by providing us the capability for 24/7 emergency response services. We thank Nevada GOED/CDBG for their continued support of our community given that without such support, these would not happen.”

“The opening of the new West Wendover Fire Station is a proud moment for this community, and we’re honored that CDBG program could help make it a reality,” said CDBG Program Administrator Jessica Sanders. “This project reflects the very heart of what CDBG stands for, supporting critical infrastructure that keeps rural communities safe, strong and resilient. Across Nevada, CDBG continues to be a powerful tool in helping small towns meet big needs.”

Since 1982, when Nevada began the administration of the program, more than $100 million has been awarded to rural Nevada communities. The CDBG program enables local governments to undertake a wide range of activities intended to create suitable living environments, provide affordable housing, and create economic opportunities, primarily for persons of low and moderate income. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development oversees the program, and the Rural Community Development Division of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers the program for the State of Nevada.
