In September 2017, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued 27 new awards through its NSF INCLUDES program aimed at enhancing U.S. leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) discoveries and innovations through a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Among the recipients is a Nevada consortium comprising the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), Washoe County School District, Charles River Laboratories, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. The program is also supported by Nevada’s New Skills for Youth Grant.
This project managed by UNR addresses the grand challenge of increasing underrepresentation regionally in the Life Sciences and Advanced Manufacturing sector. Using the Learn and Earn Program Advanced Career Pathway (LEAP) as the foundation, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities will support and prepare Hispanic students for the region’s workforce.
We have partnered with local northern Nevada-based companies to train participants on the LEAP Pathway.
Employer-based student tuition reimbursement (up to $1,500 / year) is available for up to 30 underrepresented individuals in lucrative STEM based careers.
